STOP-BANG Questionnaire: Screen Your Risk of Sleep Apnea

The STOP-BANG questionnaire is a validated 8-item screening tool used by clinicians worldwide to identify people at risk of obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). Answer each question honestly — your result is calculated instantly and never leaves your browser.

    SSnoring

Do you snore loudly (louder than talking or loud enough to be heard through a closed door)?

    TTiredness

Do you often feel tired, fatigued, or sleepy during the daytime?

    OObserved apnea

Has anyone observed you stop breathing during your sleep?

    PHigh blood pressure

Do you have, or are you being treated for, high blood pressure?

    BBMI over 35 kg/m²

Is your body mass index over 35?

    AAge over 50

Are you older than 50 years?

    NNeck circumference over 40 cm

Is your neck larger than 40 cm (approx. 16 inches)?

    GMale gender

    Are you male?

How the STOP-BANG score is interpreted

    • 0–2: Low risk of moderate-to-severe OSA
    • 3–4: Intermediate risk — worth discussing with a GP
    • 5–8: High risk — a formal sleep study is strongly recommended

    Important limitations

STOP-BANG is a screening tool, not a diagnosis. Only a sleep study (polysomnography or a home sleep test) can confirm obstructive sleep apnea. If your score is intermediate or high — or if your partner has witnessed you stop breathing — please book a GP appointment. See our guide on what to expect during a sleep study.
